Painting tortoiseshell

Tortoiseshel

comes from the shell
of the hawksbill  sea turtle,
an endangered species.

It was widely used until the 1970's
in the manufacture of accessories
such as boxes, frames, jewelry,
hair clips and combs,
guitar picks and more.

Tortoiseshell trade was banned in 1973
internationally under CITES - the Convention
on International Trade in Endangered Species.
Since that time, synthetic versions
have been made to replace
the natural version. They have come close...
but can never duplicate the natural beauty,
durability, and its organic warmth against the skin.
The old coveted pieces are highly prized
and very collectible. There are so many
wonderful pieces to collect.

Do you love tortoiseshell?

Do you own any pieces?

Happy New Year!

Come in and see
what's new.

We received
a press release this morning
from a local
Chicago vintage organization
and major promoter of Chicago
vintage events and sales -

They reported
 their 2012 findings
from vintage and antique
market sales
from the past year.

 Their founder,
vintage style guru,
Melissa Sands,
put together a
current list
on what is HOT
and what is NOT right now.

Here it is:

Hot, hot, HOT!

  1. Anything from the 1920s
  2. Menswear

  6. Lamps

NOT, not, not!
  1. China
  2. Cups and Saucers
  3. Cookie Jars

Blue Cardinal has lots of luggage!

Good news!
We carry everything
on the HOT LIST
with the exception of
vintage men's clothing
at
Blue Cardinal.
